NCF-North American Envirothon Competition, July 22 -July 28, 2018
High school teams from all over the US, Canadian territories/provinces, as well as China, gathered at Idaho State University to compete in the National Conservation Foundation Envirothon competition. The host state, Idaho, did a phenomenal job in providing a top-notch competition that challenged the teams to step up their game!
The first "National Envirothon" took place in 1988 in Pennsylvania and has continued annually to provide hands-on environmental and natural resource management education to high school students all over North America and China. Participants are empowered to think critically and practically about achieving and maintaining a natural balance between the quality of life and the environment. This year, the current event topic was Western Rangeland Management: Balancing Diverse Views. Idaho provided an amazing environment to immerse competitors in the challenges federal, state and private entities deal with daily when managing rangelands in local communities and for multiple uses.
The GA State Envirothon 2018 winners from Vantage Point did an excellent job in representing our state at the North American level. Having placed 10th out of 50 teams, Emma Alexander, Joan Deitsch, John Deitsch, Nadya Gutierrez, and Brandon Waterfill, prepared throughout the summer to learn more about management practices out west. It paid off!

Georgia State EnvirothonCompetition, March 2018
The top 9 teams from around the state gathered at Hard Labor Creek State Park for a 2-day event on March 27 & 28. Teams had been working hard to prepare for the next round of competition that took the students' knowledge on Georgia Envirothon topics to another level. Having received the current topic scenario on March 14, teams had approximately 13 days to prepare an oral presentation set to be given to a panel of judges in response to the management issue brought forth in the scenario. Presentations were turned in at noon on March 27th when teams arrived. Presentations started around 12:45pm and continued throughout the day. A variety of outdoor activities were provided for teams to engage in when not presenting, though, a bit cold outside. A cold front had hit Georgia and everyone was bundling up. The second day of competition started early in the morning with station testing in wildlife, forestry, soils & land use, and aquatic ecology. Warmer weather set in for the outdoor testing and all the teams faired well with the station rotation schedule as well as the tests and hands-on activities themselves. Many thanks go out to all the hard work put forth by our volunteers and sponsors in providing a great opportunity for the student teams and their advisors!
Congratulations goes out to the top winning teams this year! First place, with top finishes in all 5 categories (Orals, Aquatic Ecology, Wildlife, Forestry and Soils & Land Use), went to Vantage Point Team 1. Greater Atlanta Christian School Team White was awarded second place overall with Appling County High School taking third place overall.
