Rules & Policies

Qualifications

Only students enrolled in grades 9 through 12 (or equivalent home school ranking) are eligible to compete at the competition.

Each team must consist of at least 4 but no more than 6 members from the same school, organization, or association. If your team wins the right to advance to the national competition, at least four members of your original team must participate.

A team advisor and/or public agency or conservation district representative must accompany each team.
  • Advisors must stay with their team(s) or in the main event area during the competition and are responsible for the conduct of their team throughout the competition.
  • It is the responsibility of the school or organization to provide proper chaperones for the team. The Georgia Envirothon assumes no responsibility for improperly chaperoned teams.
  • In addition, all teams must remain at the competition site for the entire length of the competition.
  • Advisors may accompany their teams to the testing stations but may not interact with their teams during the testing period, nor take photos of tests or testing materials.

Registration

A pre-registration form shall be submitted to the Georgia Envirothon by the required date to hold your team’s spot.
A final registration form listing the names of team members and advisors must be submitted by the required date set by the GA Envirothon Council.

Prohibitions

  • Tobacco, drugs, and all alcohol are PROHIBITED and may not be brought on the premises of the competition host site.
  • No electronic devices, including cell phones, smart watches, Fitbits, cameras, PDAs, etc., may be used during the competition by any competitor unless the team’s advisor receives written permission from the Envirothon Council and the advisor’s request was submitted in advance of the competition.  If team members are found with devices during the competition, his/her team will be disqualified from the competition.
  • No backpacks or similar cases shall be taken to the testing circuit.  If needed, a small device for carrying personal items, (i.e. medications), will be provided but will be subject to prior approval and inspection by GA Envirothon representatives before competitions.
  • Generally speaking, teams may carry only the itinerary, writing tools, water bottles, and snacks (calculators, clipboards and other items will be provided, as needed, at stations).

Study Materials

The participating resource agencies will compile a study packet to prepare for the Envirothon competition. The same packet will  serve as the resource packet for both the state and national competitions. These study packets will be posted online.
Resource materials are prohibited at the competition host site during competition periods.

Competition Format

  • The five (5) station testing will be conducted by cooperating agencies. Team members should work together to answer test questions, submitting one completed test to the station coordinator(s) before moving to the next station.
  • Each of the five (5) station tests will be 45 minutes in length.
  • All testing at the competition will be written.
  • In the event that two teams from the same school are in the competition, no exchange of information concerning the competition is permitted at any time during the competition.
  • Interchange of station test information or competition-related topics between an advisor and his/her team is strictly prohibited.
  • Each team will rotate AS A TEAM through the testing stations (Aquatic Ecology, Forestry, Soil Land Use, Wildlife, and Current Issue).

  • Team members must wear the official Georgia Envirothon T-shirt throughout the competition.
  • Proctors decisions are final on all events.
  • The lunch break is considered a part of the Envirothon competition. Studying or use of other materials is prohibited during the lunch break. No access to cell phones or electronic devices is allowed.
  • The GA Envirothon competitions will be held rain or shine. Participants should be prepared to encounter mud, rain, wind, ticks, poison ivy, etc. and should dress accordingly. A change of clothes and/or shoes is highly recommended.
  • Any team, team member, team advisor, or team chaperone discovered on, near, or around the testing circuit before the competition begins shall be subject to disqualification.
  • Any areas not specifically covered by these rules will be subject to the rules of the National Envirothon.

Scoring

  • Final team placement will be a cumulative total of the 5 station test scores.
  • In the event that two teams are tied at a station, station leaders will be prepared with 5 to 10 short answer questions that serve as tie-breakers. These questions could be automatically incorporated into the station written tests.  The teams will have a fixed amount of time to write down their answer(s).
  • In the event of an overall tie score, the current environmental station scores will be used as a tie-breaker at all competitions followed by aquatics, forestry, soils and wildlife.
  • Tests and scoring materials will remain the property of the Georgia Envirothon Council.
